Patricia: Male orgasm is NOT necessary for reproduction; ejaculation is. Male orgasm & ejaculation are physiologically separate events. That they often occur spontaneously in adolescent and younger adult men and are perceived to be the same is not equivalent to an identical physiological process. JANE: Kinsey pointed out that orgasm may occur without ejaculation (in young boys who are not yet sexually mature) but ejaculation never occurs without orgasm. There is no other trigger (apart from orgasm) that could cause ejaculation to occur. JANE (cont): Kinsey suggested that the confusion may arise because orgasm is often considered to be synonymous with orgastic pleasure. Inevitably the intensity of pleasure associated with orgasm varies (and can be quite muted) but it still occurs before ejaculation (in mature men). JANE (cont): Ejaculation within a vagina is the biological event that leads to reproduction. This male reproductive biology explains why our heterosexual society puts intercourse at the centre of sex. It does not however mean that intercourse is the most likely activity that leads to female orgasm because female orgasm has nothing to do with reproduction. Patricia: I agree with you except for your last point that female orgasm has nothing to do with reproduction. That is a controversial topic and is debated within the evolution of sex within anthropology. JANE: What I mean is that a woman can conceive without ever experiencing orgasm. This explains why so few women are concerned about orgasm. Despite the knowledge that clitoral stimulation is required for orgasm, our heterosexual society still supports intercourse as the key lovemaking act. JANE (cont): Vaginal intercourse provides men with the stimulation they need for orgasm. It also allows a woman to take a passive role in sex by facilitating male orgasm rather than aiming for her own. Oral sex and mutual masturbation require more effort and are more explicitly sexual.
